Portuguese Way of Santiago from Tui
Being important since the independence of Portugal in the twelfth century, this itinerary is rich in history, monuments, churches and references to the pilgrim world and it is also the best equipped in terms of hospitality that is getting better year by year. Many writings report journeys along this route, by travelers of all nationalities. However, towards the end of the 15th century, the Portuguese path fell into decline due to the spread of diseases such as the plague, the wars of religion and the increasingly frequent attacks on pilgrims. In the following 300 years, the traces of the portoguese paths that led to Santiago were almost lost, as indeed also in Spain. Everything changed when Pope Leo XIII sanctioned the discovery of the remains of the saint that had been forgotten and hidden. In the twentieth century, the ancient ways of faith were rediscovered throughout Europe thanks also to the intervention of Pope John Paul II.
